project
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Learn the scientific research that supports up to two years growth for students when independent reading occurs for 20 minutes each time class meets. Understand how trusting relationships affect teachers’ and students’ self-efficacy and desire to learn and read.

2. Learn how teacher read-alouds can be powerful tools for modeling and thinking aloud in order to improve students’ comprehension and enjoyment of independent reading.  Acquire strategies for helping students choose “good fit” books.

3. Explore how to organize classroom libraries and ways of featuring authors and genres. Understand the guidelines for book talks and book reviews—two authentic ways to assess independent reading.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Pull up a seat and listen to renowned educator and author Laura Robb, who will take you on a journey to learn about independent reading, and how it boosts student growth and achievement. You will also walk away with practical, and easily implementable techniques, that you can initiate in your own classroom and school.

Throughout this course, Laura will guide you through the benefits of independent reading and review the scientific research that clearly shows a strong correlation between the amount of independent reading students complete and their reading growth and achievement. She will discuss strategies for finding time in your schedule, and how teacher read-alouds can be tools for modeling and thinking aloud, and how to use these skills to improve independent reading.

Laura will use read-alouds from different books in her classroom libraries to model, in the bonus chapters, how think-alouds can improve students’ comprehension.  By making visible what good readers do while reading, think-alouds can strengthen students’ understanding, pleasure in reading, and their desire to read at school and home. Also included is a detailed downloadable article on what to model before, during, and after reading that includes think-aloud tips for each element of comprehension.

Laura will introduce you to strategies for helping students choose “good fit” books and will offer ideas for what teachers can do when students resist reading. You will also explore how to use conferring to support students’ independent reading and monitor progress and attitudes.

In addition, Laura will discuss the guidelines for book talks and book reviews—two authentic ways to assess independent reading. You will also learn about classroom libraries, including content, how to organize, teacher book talks, featuring authors and genres, and much more.

This course comes equipped with valuable downloadable course materials that will take your learning experience to the next level. These resources are designed to enhance your understanding of the course and help you excel in the classroom. Laura includes over twenty pages of reading prompts, mentor texts, guidelines and literacy ideas that will help you create a classroom environment that fosters a love for reading. These materials are designed to encourage students to think critically, engage with the text, and develop their own unique perspectives. By using these resources, you can help your students unlock the transformative power of reading and inspire them to become lifelong learners.

By the end of this course, with Laura Robb's expert guidance and support, you will have the knowledge and tools to create a positive and engaging reading culture in your classroom, foster students' love for reading, and support their reading growth. Don't miss this opportunity to enhance your teaching skills and make a real difference in your students' lives!

Increase Reading Volume: Practical Strategies That Boost Students’ Achievement and Passion for Reading

By fourth or fifth grade, many striving readers have lost their self-confidence and the belief that, with hard work, they can reach a goal. Whether these students were on a computer reading program, in a grade-level basal program, or listening to a required novel, they weren’t reading. Yet, we know that engaging books help students to develop their reading skill and expertise. Voluminous reading is an intervention. This book suggests practical ways to organize instruction so students in English language arts classes and across the curriculum read voluminously every day.

You’ll walk away with concrete ideas for:

  • using the seven pillars of engagement to increase reading volume;
  • moving toward more culturally responsive teaching that engages students;
  • extending the reach of partner and small-group collaborations;
  • working with both students and your school library to ensure access to books; and
  • students will want to read, and pairing core collections with contemporary texts to increase interest in reading.

Addressing students’ emotional blocks to reading while simultaneously helping them develop the necessary reading skills can help you turn students into passionate, voracious readers in and out of the classroom.
