About Laura Robb

Laura Robb has been a classroom teacher in grades four to eight and coached teachers in kindergarten to grade ten for more than 45 years. Laura affirms that her best teachers have been her students: getting to know them, responding to their needs, conferring with them, and listening to their stories to understand the kinds of support they’d benefit from have informed her teaching practices. Laura supports student-centered learning, offering students voice and choices in their learning. In addition, Laura believes that differentiating reading and writing instruction is key to reaching all students and supporting their growth throughout the school year.

Laura is a prolific author of over forty books, along with a multitude of articles, and resources for teachers and administrators. Laura is also a well-known speaker, who has presented at conferences, workshops, and professional development events, sharing her knowledge and experience with fellow educators. Her writing often incorporates research-based practices, and she is committed to helping educators implement effective teaching methods to improve literacy outcomes.

Throughout her career, Ms. Robb has been a fierce advocate for student-centered learning, and ensuring that schools work to cultivate a culture of reading. Her influence in the field of education, particularly in literacy instruction, is evident through her writing, speaking engagements, and commitment to advancing teaching practices. Laura Robb received NCTE’s Richard W. Halle award for excellence in middle level education, Scholastic’s Hero Award for her unfailing support of teachers and steadfast belief that every child can succeed, and Nassau Reading Council’s Literacy Award for her outstanding work in reading.

Laura's Superpower
Laura’s superpower is her constant connection with classroom teachers and students as she returns to the classroom each year to coach and team teach. Laura does this to understand teacher and student needs, interactions and the classroom environment. Laura is a keen listener, respects where teachers and students are on their learning journey, and believes that student-centered learning is an excellent way to engage and motivate everyone.

Increase Reading Volume: Practical Strategies That Boost Students’ Achievement and Passion for Reading

By fourth or fifth grade, many striving readers have lost their self-confidence and the belief that, with hard work, they can reach a goal. Whether these students were on a computer reading program, in a grade-level basal program, or listening to a required novel, they weren’t reading. Yet, we know that engaging books help students to develop their reading skill and expertise. Voluminous reading is an intervention. This book suggests practical ways to organize instruction so students in English language arts classes and across the curriculum read voluminously every day.

You’ll walk away with concrete ideas for:

  • using the seven pillars of engagement to increase reading volume;
  • moving toward more culturally responsive teaching that engages students;
  • extending the reach of partner and small-group collaborations;
  • working with both students and your school library to ensure access to books; and
  • students will want to read, and pairing core collections with contemporary texts to increase interest in reading.

Addressing students’ emotional blocks to reading while simultaneously helping them develop the necessary reading skills can help you turn students into passionate, voracious readers in and out of the classroom.
